GI Joburg Episode 79: Rogue One

Happy 2017 GI Joburg friends! We did it last year with The Force Awakens, so we guess it's a tradition now! But hey, don't we have Star Wars to thank for our beloved GI Joe toyline after all? Rogue One tops the agenda. We talk toys, the film, even a bit of conspiracy theory. Black-clad action figures feature in our definitive sculpt section. And of course, a little bit of the indomitable Carrie Fisher.
"General? To me she's royalty."

Leia doesn't have a better hit ratio. And Stormtroopers aren't inaccurate. It's called writing a fictional narrative. The films aren't a documentary with people following them along. It's all being retold by Threepio a long time in the future. 🤦🏻♂️😅

Oh you want to talk about tears welling up in your eyes over star wars huh. As an EU fan I can think of a specific moment where I always well up. Vector Prime, Chewie's death. Rouge One even used Chewie's death for Saw's. That scene of Saw facing a "moon" attacking the planet he's on and know he's going to die puts his arms out in defiance. Just like Chewie did on Sernpidal as its moon was crashing into the planet and tearing it apart. Han's reaction to his death and how he treats his youngest son for a time after is the best character arc in all SW except Vader and Luke's. Han blames his son for Chewie's death and eventually forgives his son. But later his son is on a mission and to save his older siblings and other Jedi he sacrifices himself by holding off a bunch of enemy soldiers. Han takes this really bad because he knows that his son was repaying Chewie's death. And this death causes Han's older son Jacen to slowly fall to the dark side. The EU is better than Disney dudes. I hate Disney so much right now. 🤦🏻♂️

Mitichlorians don't negate the mystical aspect of the force. It's chi. It's a means to determine a power level and a nod to the EUs use of the emperor being able to scan people to see who had a high sensitivity to the force. Which is cool and Nazi esque.

My high point from this film was seeing that one Stormtrooper Churrut is fighting gets shot in the dick. Seriously, rewatch that scene. His cod piece took a hit. My low point is how bad they're ripping off the EU through all of this and no one is willing to read those novels.

I think Disney was emulating Leia's speech in ESB before the battle. They just don't get constantly rehashing the OT is not SW.

The intentional design flaw makes no sense. Some other imperial engineer or technician or Droid would have noticed that defect at some point. It makes more sense as an unintentional flaw than an intentional one.

Well of course Star Wars is going to make toy related moves. SW is like Joe's, a toy oriented franchise.

The fact that Vader's tie is a developmental tie suggests they were developing tie variants. Our military is constantly testing new jets they just don't broadcast all of them. And the Striker has a prototype form of the Interceptor wing style. These strikers could have been a prototype tie exclusive to Scarif. It's mostly based on the Tie Phantom from Rebel Assault. And the canon has always spoke of how the empire is constantly testing new ships. You guys should play the X wing versus Tie Fighter PC games. They're flight simulation games where you play as rebels or imps and gain character xp and rank. X wing Alliance is the best game of this series though.

The planet wasn't destroyed, the just destroyed the city. I'm sure a lot of people had gotten out of there but how they would know would have to be from imps telling them or overheard transmissions.

I hate how they made the exhaust port a design flaw. It works better as something the rebels figured out and exploited.
