GI Joburg Episode 79: Rogue One

Happy 2017 GI Joburg friends! We did it last year with The Force Awakens, so we guess it's a tradition now! But hey, don't we have Star Wars to thank for our beloved GI Joe toyline after all? Rogue One tops the agenda. We talk toys, the film, even a bit of conspiracy theory. Black-clad action figures feature in our definitive sculpt section. And of course, a little bit of the indomitable Carrie Fisher.
"General? To me she's royalty."

I pretty much watch R1 and see it through its proper EU canon filter.

Harkens back to Inglorious Bastards? It proves how unoriginal Disney is by simply stringing past influences together to make a film.

George Lucas is the author of Star Wars. I think if you can't accept his saga you're not a fan of Star Wars you're simply a sci fi fan that likes 2/9 Lucas SW films. And however many Disney films.

R1 is almost a complete rip off of the Dark Forces novels. It sucks hearing people who never read the books or played the older games talking about Disney as if they're original or new. When all Disney is doing is rehashing a source over and over and over.

Man I can tell the anti prequel meme is strong with you guys. I'm not the type of person who needs a consensus to think something is good. So we differ on that angle.

The FO Tie seats like the SNL "Love Seat" dual toilet. 🤣

About R1: I hated it. I hate Disney for not adhering to the established canon. They could have called Cassian Kyle and Jyn Jan and let them live. I like the design of the troopers and ships and some droids but the story and characters suck. And most of the film is a rip off of the EU. I could spend an hour listing what is from where. It makes me sick how they claimed they wanted creative freedom when they just use the EU anyways. 😔

The ring on the condor is the propulsion. It's like those ring shaped fans we have now. Only this is an 80's sci fi extrapolation of it into a jet engine. Which isn't that outlandish. Coupled with the swept forward wing design on this I can see it flying. And it probably also has orbital ability. The service ceiling on the blackbird is classified after all. For all we know they've already got primitive "starfighters" capable of docking with the space stations. Space Force! Woo!
